Songbyrd Music House: 150+ Shows Through a 200-Cap Basement

The Brief & Scale

A 200 capacity basement room on 18th Street in Adams Morgan, and one of DC's most consistent rooms for national touring acts on the way up. Tyler Childers played it in 2017 and was headlining The Anthem, a 6,000 capacity venue, two years later.

Production Scope

Production Manager across two years. Advanced and ran 150+ shows, roughly a show and a half every week, working over three hundred acts across multi-band bills. Supervised a nightly crew of four to six front of house engineers, stagehands and door staff, negotiated technical and hospitality riders directly with tour management, and settled with each act at the end of the night.

The Operational Challenge

The room is a basement. Every touring act's gear came down a flight of stairs from a congested commercial corridor with no loading dock, in an occupied building under a hard noise ordinance. Riders written for 1,000 capacity clubs had to be renegotiated to fit a 200 capacity stage without losing the act.

OPERATIONAL FRAMEWORK

Running a Basement Room

Rider Advancing

Negotiated technical, audio and hospitality riders directly with tour management, translating specs written for bigger rooms onto a 200 capacity stage without losing the act.

Load-In With No Dock

Ran high-turnaround load-ins down a flight of stairs off the 18th Street corridor, managing street permits, van parking and staggered gear arrivals in tight windows.

Run of Show Under a Noise Ordinance

Directed soundchecks, fifteen-minute changeovers and set timing across multi-band bills, in an occupied building under a hard decibel limit.

Crew & Wrap

Hired and supervised the nightly crew across front of house, stage and door, managed the local production budget, and closed each night with settlement and a wrap report.

TRACK RECORD

What Two Years in the Room Built

  • 150+ shows across two years. Roughly a show and a half a week at a 200 capacity room, advanced and run end to end, from first rider email through night-of settlement.
  • Ran the room for acts on the way up. Tyler Childers played the basement in 2017 and was headlining The Anthem, 6,000 capacity, two years later.
  • Negotiated and settled direct. Handled rider terms with agents and tour management before the show and settled with them at the end of the night, with no intermediary booking agency in between.
