Black Love Experience: 2,000 Guests, 12 Zones, One Night
The Brief & Scale
One of DC's largest Black cultural gatherings, drawing 2,000+ attendees into Historic Anacostia in a single night. Across two consecutive years the event scaled from a single arts center into a multi-venue footprint spanning THEARC and the Anacostia Arts Center, with 12 distinct zones of engagement running concurrently.
Production Scope
Production Manager across two consecutive years. Ran site operations and spatial planning for all 12 zones: live music stages, a 40+ vendor marketplace, interactive art installations, wellness programming, and community panels. Directed a twenty-five person production and volunteer team and held the master run of show.
The Operational Challenge
A single-night event at this density leaves no recovery window. 2,000+ guests, 40+ vendors and eighteen performances, DJ sets and panel sessions had to load in, run, and load out across separate venue footprints inside one operating day, with no shared back of house. Built one master schedule that every venue, vendor and stage worked from.
Multi-Zone Activation & Site Operations
Designed spatial flow and operational logistics for 12 concurrent zones, sequencing high-energy performance stages against quiet wellness rooms and interactive installations so 2,000+ guests could move between them without bottlenecks.
Ran floor plans, load-in windows and day-of logistics for a 40+ vendor marketplace sourced from DC, New York, Philadelphia, Senegal and South Africa, coordinating international shipping timelines against a single-night sell-through.
Held master run-of-show timing across multi-genre music sets, DJ lineups and panel sessions, directing technical crews through eighteen performances, DJ sets and panel sessions and stage changeovers with no schedule slip.
Negotiated venue clearances across four Ward 8 sites, managed safety and capacity protocols, and directed on-site teams through simultaneous load-in and load-out inside a single operating window.
What Held
- Repeat engagement. Brought back for a second consecutive year after the first, with expanded scope across a larger venue footprint.
- Multi-venue execution at single-night compression. 12 zones and 40+ vendors delivered across separate sites inside one operating day, with no shared back of house and no schedule slip.
- Scale without loss of trust. Grew the operational footprint while keeping vendor relationships and community partnerships intact, which is what made the return year possible.
