Art+Feminism: Building Global Communications Infrastructure for Open Tech
The Brief & Scale
Art+Feminism needed a unified narrative strategy for a decentralized network of 4,000+ organizers and 1,500+ institutional partners across six continents, working in the open-knowledge movement alongside Wikimedia.
Strategic Scope
Reporting directly to the Executive Director, built the organization's first scalable communications architecture: global editorial strategy across email, social and web, modular campaign toolkits, and international PR strategy.
The Strategic Challenge
Translating dense technical concepts like open-access data, Wikidata architecture, and algorithmic equity into clear public campaigns required lightweight systems that aligned volunteers worldwide without introducing bureaucracy or restricting local autonomy.
Scalable Infrastructure for a Decentralized Network
Translated complex open-access principles, Wikidata architecture, and digital equity into accessible, platform-ready campaigns that resonated across international audiences.
Built centralized messaging infrastructure, shared content calendars, and Meta-Wiki documentation to align campaign messaging across time zones and regional networks.
Directed external media strategy and op-ed placement, including a published piece in the Women's Media Center, the outlet founded by Gloria Steinem, Jane Fonda and Robin Morgan.
Authored multilingual digital toolkits and promotional assets that enabled organizers in dozens of countries to execute cohesive, localized campaigns in real time.
A Network That Could Hear Itself.
- Email open rates up 40%, social engagement up 22%. Stood up the organization's first audience tracking system and used it to drive content decisions.
- The first scalable movement architecture. Messaging infrastructure, shared calendars and Meta-Wiki documentation aligned 4,000+ organizers across six continents without overriding regional autonomy, alongside partnerships with MoMA, Wikimedia and the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
- Published in national media. Wrote and placed an op-ed in the Women's Media Center on the gender gap in open-knowledge platforms, extending the campaign's argument beyond the network's own channels.
